Prostate enlargement

What is Benign Prostate enlargement?

Benign Prostate Enlargement (BPE), also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a medical condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland, which can impact urination.

BPE is frequently observed in men aged over 50 and is typically non-cancerous, posing no significant threat to overall health.

Contrary to common concerns, having an enlarged prostate does not inherently elevate the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Men with BPE do not face a greater risk of prostate cancer compared to those without an enlarged prostate gland.

Causes of Benign Prostate enlargement

The exact cause of prostate enlargement remains uncertain, yet it is widely associated with hormonal fluctuations that occur with aging.

As men age, hormonal imbalances can trigger changes in the body, potentially leading to the enlargement of the prostate gland.

Symptoms of Benign Prostate enlargement

The prostate gland, situated in the pelvis between the bladder and the penis, is relatively small. However, if it enlarges, it can exert pressure on the bladder and the urethra, the tube through which urine flows.

This pressure can lead to changes in urination patterns, resulting in:

    1. Challenges initiating urination

    2. Increased frequency of urination

    3. Difficulty completely emptying the bladder
